Beyond Elo: a Layered Evaluation of Network Ranking Algorithms Applied to Soccer

This project studies network-based methods for ranking nodes in directed competition networks, using national football leagues as a case study. Four methods are implemented and compared: the Elo rating system as a baseline, Park & Newman's win–loss score, Radicchi's PageRank-based prestige score, and De Bacco's SpringRank. They are evaluated against one another and against the standard league table, both in the orderings they produce and in their predictive performance. The treatment of drawn matches, which the source methods do not address, is also discussed.
